Cleanings (Basic / Deep)

Has it been awhile since you had your teeth cleaned?

Tartar or Calculus:  which  sticks to the necks of teeth, is the enemy we are fighting. Calculus  can cause destruction of the gums and underlying bone if allowed to  remain on the teeth.  As calculus grows, it extends above and below the  gum line, firmly attaching itself to the tooth and irritating the gum  tissue. Calculus begins as a soft, sticky material called plaque. The  responsibility for plaque removal is your job. The best way to keep  teeth free from plaque is to properly brush and floss them daily. A  plaque-free tooth stays a calculus-free tooth.

Regular Cleaning - The purpose of a cleaning is to remove plaque, calculus, and  stains  from the surfaces of teeth above the gingival margin (gum line).  This  procedure is called a prophylaxis.

Debride - This is when you have a lot of tartar on your teeth. Usually when it has been awhile since you have been in to see a dentist.

Periodontal Disease (Deep Cleaning):
One  of the most prevalent disease of man is gum (periodontal) disease. More  than 80 percent of teeth that are pulled (extracted) in people 30 years  of age and older are lost due to periodontal disease. This is ironic  because pyorrhea is one of the easiest diseases to prevent. Thorough  brushing and flossing on a regular basis prevent most periodontal  diseases.

Periodontal disease affects the supporting tissues of  the teeth - the gums and underlying bone. Even when periodontal trouble  is extensive it is usually painless, and patients are generally unaware  of any gum problem. Periodontal trouble may continue for several years  before loss of teeth occurs eventually, as the gums and bone dissolve  away from the teeth, the teeth become loose. If this process continues,  the teeth will have to be removed because of loss of support.

Soft  and hard irritating deposits on the teeth are the major cause of gum  disease. The soft, sticky, clear material is called dental plaque. It is  made up of bacteria (germs), small pieces of food, and saliva. If you  allow plaque to remain on the teeth, it becomes a hard, crust like  deposit called tartar. You must remove the soft plaque on a regular  basis to prevent tartar from forming.

Dr.  Raul Reyes will do what is called Periodontal Therapy. After the plaque  and calculus are removed from the periodontal pocket and the root  surface, the area is often rough and irregular.  The roughness is  removed by root planing. This is a process of making a smooth root  surface  which is known as planing  with instruments.

Signs of Gum disease:
Don't Wait Until It Hurts.
Periodontal disease is painless. It affects 87%of the population and often victims are unaware.

These are the warning signs and the American Dental Association and our staff want you to be aware:

  1. Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth or use a toothpick between them?
  2. Are your gums red, swollen, or tender?
  3. Are your gums pulling away from your teeth?
  4. Do you see pus between your teeth and your gums when the gums are pressed?
  5. Are your permanent teeth loose or separating?
  6. Is there a change in the fit of your partial dentures?
  7. Do you have bad breath?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you owe it to yourself to bring it to the  attention of Dr. Reyes. Act now and keep your teeth for a lifetime. Call and schedule now at 805-525-2124.
